Since it began operating in the mid-1990s, Gioia Tauro has been the dominant Italian container hub by some margin. The Medcentre Container Terminal (MCT) in Gioia Tauro handled 2.65 million TEU in 2000, up around 18 % on the previous year, and almost all of this activity was transhipment-related. However, now that the Taranto Container Terminal (TCT), with the Evergreen group as the biggest shareholder, is open for business, Gioia Tauro is facing its first real threat from a domestic competitor. Already, MCT is forecasting a decline in volume this year, to around 2.5 million TEU, following the loss of Evergreen and Lloyd Triestino custom to its new rival.
