摘要

When it comes to cleaning up the environment, shipowners have had a comparatively easy ride so far. These days are over, however, and future clean-up bills are likely to be substantial. Matthew Beddow explains some of the costs involved, and why shippers might have to take a share of the pain. Increasing public awareness of environmental damage caused by ships will probably soon lead to the introduction of an additional charge for its prevention. Ocean carriers will, no doubt, be looking to add this to the long list of surcharges that already appear on their invoices.
