The proportion of international freight containers transported by rail in China is increasing. And further growth is expected in the next five years as the network's infrastructure is improved and the government's 'Go West' strategy takes hold. John Fossey reports. There is considerable optimism about intermodal rail developments in China and volumes are certainly rising. However, only about 2% comprises maritime traffic to/from the main ports, notably, Shenzhen, Shanghai and Tianjin, with the balance made up or mter-city freight. Moreover, the potential for growth is huge. First, the Chinese Government is keen to spread wealth and industrial know-how throughout China and is encouraging investment in the interior through attractive tax and property deals. The plan is also in full accordance with the government's plan to reform the country's agricultural system.
