Pacer International ups operating profit

The US-based 3PL and transport provider Pacer International has reported a buoyant Q1 2008, particularly operating profit, both overall and in its intermodal (stacktrain, cartage and brokerage) segment. The company's January-March 2008 revenues were USD509.4 million, an increase of 9.5% over the same period last year. Of this, intermodal revenues accounted for USD406.6 million (up by 8.9%) and logistics revenues USD 103 million (12.3% higher). Pacer's operating profit (EBIT) shot up by 70.8%, reaching USD24.6 million. Because the EBIT for the company's logistics and corporate (non-core) segments were both negative (a loss), Pacer's intermodal operating profit alone amounted to USD31.9 million, an increase of 66.1%. The logistics segment's EBIT loss dropped from -USD0.1 million to -0.8 million, which was attributed to 'excess capacity, declining prices and higher transportation and fuel costs affecting [Pacer's] trucking units'.
