APM leaves Port Everglades

Faced with reduced shipments to and from southern Florida, Universal Marine Services (UMS), a subsidiary of APM Terminals (APMT), has withdrawn from cargo-handling operations at Port Everglades. The decision is viewed as a major cost-cutting exercise by the AP Moller-Maersk Group, which owns APMT, and involves axing 11 workers. However, APMT will incur a penalty of USD2.6 million ayear for a minimum of three years, as the company is prematurely terminating a lease agreement which was due to expire in 2013.
