HACKERS TARGET PORT IT SYSTEMS

Port digital information systems are a priority cybercrime target. Criminals are now thinking outside of the steel box by hacking the complex data links that enable maritime supply chains. The United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime estimates that total illegal activities account for 3.6% of global gross domestic product, while the European Commission calculates the damage caused by corruption in the European Union alone at some €120bn a year, equivalent to 1.1% of the trading bloc's GDP. While maritime supply chains are only a part of that total picture, containers are enablers of global trade.
