Container shipping is in the throes of unprecedented upheaval as the top lines form super-alliances, phase in ships of recordbreaking capacity, and prepare for new trade routes once the enlarged Panama Canal is completed. To some extent, ports are bit-players in this drama, hopeful that they will be included in sailing schedules but with their fortunes largely in the hands of others. When carriers are considering port calls, location is a prime consideration. But as ships get larger, so too are water depth and landside equipment.
