Bridge over troubled water

The Shanghai Yangshan Deep Water Port project is located on the north of Hangzhou Bay, East Sea of China. The Dong Hai Bridge, also known as the East Sea Bridge/Eastern Ocean Bridge, forms an important part of this project and will be the world's longest sea crossing. The bridge is about 31km long, with three lanes in each direction and emergency lanes with an overall deck width of 31.5m. It is designed to handle speeds of up to 80km/h and the design life of the structure is 100 years. The crossing will set a world record for bridge construction. Offshore construction is only possible during 180 days of the year due to the rough sea and weather conditions but the bridge will be built within three and a half years. Construction commenced in late June 2002 and has to be completed before the end of 2005.
