Carriers turn to bunker surcharges to prop up rates

BOX lines are turning to bunker surcharges to offset spiralling oil costs, with the world's two largest container shipping lines informing customers of imminent price rises. Maersk Line has joined fellow European carrier Mediterranean Shipping Co in announcing an emergency bunker surcharge due to what it called "the unsustainable nature of the situation".
