Lime―Many words have multiple definitions and usages, and that can lead to confusion. "Lime" is one example. It can mean calcium oxide (CaO), calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)_2), or any calcium compound. It can even mean magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)_2), which is close but does not have the same makeup. Lime mortars, for example, usually are those made with calcium hydroxide (hydrated quicklime or slaked lime) but also can be "dolomitic lime," which is a mixture of calcium and magnesium hydroxides.
