Introduction: Copyright, Culture, Creativity, and the Commons

In 1998, Computers and Composition and Kairos both published special issues related to intellectual property. Computers and Composition's special issue, edited by Laura Gurak and Johndan Johnson-Eilola, remains a heavily cited source for contemporary scholars interested in intellectual property issues, despite its vintage. Kairos' special issue, entitled "Copyright, Plagiarism, and Intellectual Property," featured contributions from (among others) TyAnna K. Herrington and Rebecca Moore Howard, whose work in the issue set the stage for some of the pioneering book-length work on intellectual property produced by scholars in composition studies (e.g., Herrington, 2001,2003; Moore Howard, 1999).
