Multiple reports of data warehouses failing to provide return on investment are cause for concern, both by organizations now operating these facilities and companies thinking about implementing them. Fewer than one-quarter of data warehouse owners consider their results worthwhile. Furthermore, a similar small fraction has confidence in the reports produced by their information intelligence systems. The substantial cost of data warehousing, as shown in Figure 1, severely penalizes organizations that are not able to realize a positive return on their investment. These failures usually stem more from corporate cultural issues rather than technological causes.
