Storage virtualization, a technology that breaks the link between a company's data and the physical hardware on which it is stored, is a response to a well-known problem. Even in an economic downturn, businesses continue to collect ever-larger amounts of data about sales, customers, and operational events. Market-research firm IDC estimates worldwide storage capacity is growing more than 15% per year, even while the amount of money spent on external disk storage fell nearly 19% year-over-year in the second quarter.
