The structural performance of material compounds is es- sentially affected by existing defects of various kinds. The failure analysis of such heterogeneous materials requires the determination of stress states due to applied thernmo- mechanical loads as well as the assessment of the resulting stress-strain fields. The assessment in terms of failure is performed on the basis of the local J-intetral (in form of a vector j) which, for three-dimensional interface cracks, has recently been generalized by Herrmann and Hauck (1995) following the earlier work by Moran et al.
