A New Front Door for a University Campus

When the University of New Mexico's School of Architecture and Planning staged a competition for a new building in 2000, many in the university administration undoubtedly regarded it as no more than a simple design exercise to provide yet another ordinary campus learning facility. But after seven years in the making, the result of this competition-won by local architect Antoine Predock-has been to provide the university with a stunning arrival image, visible to all who approach the campus along the main traffic artery, Central Avenue. Although the present site was an integral part of the competition program, that location was initially in question as it was also located on university surface parking. This immediately became an issue for the University Regents as some were reluctant to see parking spaces disappear from that site.
