A special issue dedicated to Prof. Tyrone Duncan on the occasion of his 80th birthday

This Special Issue has been brought together by important contributors to stochastic modeling, control, filtering, and related fields to celebrate the 80th birthday of Tyrone Duncan, my husband of 37 years, professional colleague, and collaborator of over 150 papers. I met Tyrone 40 years ago at the Banach Center in Warsaw, Poland at the semester devoted to control and organized by Jerzy Zabczyk, a contributor to this Special Issue. That was the time when, inspired by the work of Petr Mandl, I started to discuss stochastic adaptive control problems with Tyrone. I moved from Poland to the United States in 1984, and since that time, I have been sharing my family and professional life, which includes all contributors to this Special Issue. I would like to thank all authors and their collaborators for their most interesting and diverse contributions, indicating that the area of this multidisciplinary research has been growing, bringing new challenges and great opportunities for our younger colleagues. Through her contribution, Dominique Duncan shares invaluable data resources for COVID-19 in her hope that all interested authors will use it to advance research to end this devastating pandemic that has made a tremendous impact on our lives in 2020. The year 2020 comes to a close; it was a difficult year, and despite the difficulties, 19 contributions have been made with their purpose to inspire and motivate for further research discoveries and advancements. I would like to thank Jenny Chen, the staff editor of the CIS Journal for her invaluable assistance, and very special thanks go to Stephen Yau, the Editor-in-Chief and Co-Guest Editor of this Special Volume, for his thoughtfulness, encouragement, and kind invitation to lead this Special Volume Guest Editorial Team together with Alain Bensoussan and Sanjoy Mitter, whom I also met 40 years ago at the Banach Center in my beloved Warsaw. I always believe that I left Poland, but Poland has never left me. I have visited Poland and the Banach Center multiple times annually with the exception of this year, 2020, because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
