Evaluation mikrobiologischer Methoden zur Pruefung von Trinkwasser im Feld fuer Katastropheneinsaetze

For the last ten years the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit uses a field laboratory for the microbiological examination of water on drinking quality. The most important requirements of such a mobile laboratory are: Correct analysis data, simple handling, clear evaluation method and sufficient stability of the used growth media. Three different growth media (3M Petrifilm, Scil Compact Dry EC and Sartorius nutrient pads) were compared for this purpose with the official method of the "Schweizerischen Lebensmittelbuches (SLMB) Kapitel 56" on the basis of E. coli. As model water samples of different surface water and drinking water were examined. Altogether 102 naturally contaminated water samples were microbiologically tested. On the basis of validating data and economical and practical aspects an efficiency analysis was established. With consideration of the demanded characteristics the use of the Scil Compact Dry EC can be recommended. Compared with the method of the SLMB a concordance index Kappa of 0.89 and a false negative rate of 2.8 % was reached. Further clarifications on real disaster conditions should be still accomplished before the final introduction.
