New video hosting platforms such as YouTube became the de facto screening room for all advertising. Only in the past few years have campaign strategists in the US realized the power of video ads as political weapons. YouTube may have acted like a gatekeeper, but in reality it behaves like a wiki, pandering to the wisdom of the crowds. During the last few months of the presidential campaign, the videos became more creative. Ordinary people came up with powerful messages rivaling those created by advertising and PR agencies. And so evolved a whole new way for political campaigns and advocacy groups to use video ads that targeted the media.
