摘要

At a time when satellite imagery is readily available online and handheld devices can track our every move, it is no surprise that "surveillance" is a buzzword. Privacy is being redefined by the increasing use and integration of surveillance to perform such diverse tasks as managing traffic, tracking sex offenders, and targeting customers. In Spying with Maps, Mark Monmonier consciously works within this social context as he examines the inner workings of a collection of spatial surveillance methods. By investigating how these technologies function, Spying with Maps provides a view of surveillance and privacy that is grounded in what these "ambiguous" surveillance technologies are actually capable of.
