Pirate Politics: The New Information Policy Contests is a solid contribution to critical information studies and information and communication technology policy research. It presents the first in-depth study of the rise of pirate parties in Europe and the information and communication technology policy conjuncture from which they emerge. Burkart frames his creative analysis of "pirate politics" through Habermas and new social movement (NSM) theory. As readers unfamiliar with Habermas or NSM theory may find themselves somewhat adrift at the beginning, I recommend they skim the third chapter of Burkart's book, which fleshes out his theoretical framework in detail.
