When 500hp-plus artics were first introduced the general feeling was that they were simply an indulgence: extravagant in service and difficult to handle. The Euro-2 EC14.52ST with its S-Series 16-speed synchro box proves that these views are nonsense. We're sure that even dyed-in-the-wool Twin Splitter users will be impressed. The new synchromesh box is well matched with the 525hp Cummins and, with the fast 3.21:1 rear axle, this driveline offers a powerful, fuel-efficient performance over most road conditions. Come November when the new EC14.52ST becomes available, drivers will fall over themselves to take over a unit like this, especially a new Olympic-cabbed version. Together with the added benefits of RoadRelay, a Jake brake and cruise control the EC14.52ST is laden with charm. At 7.31 tonnes it's not quite as light as the MAN 17.502FLT Roadhaus but gives the 500hp Merc and Scania models upwards of 320kg. Contract maintenance costs are well below those of its direct rivals and its parts prices are very competitive. At £82,470 it will give the UK market leaders a run for their money and when foreign operators get the chance to evaluate it they might just be tempted enough for big British ERFs in French livery to become a familiar sight on the Champs Elysee.
