Suttons Group chairman Michael Sutton dies aged 66

On 8 May Michael Sutton, chairman and former MD of Suttons Group, died aged 66 after a short illness. Suttons Group lost a much-loved and respected leader, the Sutton family a beloved father, grandfather and uncle - and the British road transport industry one of the men who made it the industry it is today. Michael was one of the generation of haulage family bosses who followed in the footsteps of fathers who had built a post-war haulage company. His father, the late Alf Sutton, founded the business in 1954 based on the horse and cart coal delivery business his mother Alice had started in the 1920s. Michael worked in the business from the age of 19. According to Time & Tide: The History of the Suttons Group, he left school wanting to join the RAF and by that time had already obtained a private pilot's licence. He passed the entry exams but failed his medical due to an untimely bout of hayfever. On such small moments is haulage history made.
