Even though it was first to market in 2011 with Euro-6 engines employing both EGR and SCR to cut NOx, Scania has confirmed that the main thrust of its engine development is now on SCR-only engines. Speaking exclusively to CM, Scania's chief engineer for in-line engines Mikael Bjorkstrand said: "We are not changing our mind; we are using the technology that is best for the moment. It's about our knowledge of SCR and what we can do with the exhaust after-treatment." Bjorkstrand said Scania has about 60 engineers and chemists working on AdBlue injection and mixing, explaining that this has led to such a vast improvement in the performance and reliability of SCR exhaust after-treatment that it no longer needs EGR to make the first stage of NOx reduction in the engine.
