Describe almost any manufacturer as the Rolls-Royce of its trade and you can expect the compliment to be gratefully received, no questions asked. With Scania it's not quite that simple. The question arises as to which particular Rolls-Royce company you have in mind. Why? Because the aero engine manufacturer, as distinct from the arguably more famous and long since entirely separate luxury car-maker of the same name, has earned itself an enviable reputation as a hugely successful pioneer in the use of the latest information technology for remote condition monitoring, maintenance and control of aircraft engines. And Scania right now seems well on the way to achieving much the same position, in this case not just with truck and bus engines but with complete vehicles.
