Operation Broken Trust reveals 'staggering' level of US investment fraud

American Officials last month announced the results to date of "Operation Broken Trust," a three and a half month operation targeting investment fraud. They said the estimated losses in criminal cases uncovered by the operation totalled nearly $8.3 billion. In civil actions the figure was $2.1 billion. The operation found more than 120,000 victims and to date has resulted in the filing of 231 criminal cases and 60 civil enforcement actions. Describing the numbers as 'staggering', US Attorney General Eric Holder said that scams targeting individual investors are still on the rise as more and more people look to third parties to invest their money. At the same time, the victims in many cases were pulled in by people they knew well, including their neighbours or members of their church.
