Some leaves of water repellent plants are known to be superhydrophobic and self-clean- ing due to hierarchical roughness and the presence of a hydrophobic coating. Roughness induced superhydrophobic and self-cleaning surfaces are of interest in various applications, including self-cleaning windows, windshields and exterior paints for buildings, boats, ships, and aircraft, roof tiles, textiles, solar panels and applications requiring a reduction of drag of fluid flow. Surfaces are called hydrophobic if the static contact angle is above 1500. In addition, a low contact angle hysteresis plays an important role in self-cleaning and reduction of drag in fluid flow.
