摘要

Emerging infectious diseases and the increase in incidence of drug resistance among pathogenic bacteria have made the search for new antimicrobials inevitable. In the current situation, one of the most promising and novel therapeutic agents are the nanoparticles. The unique physiochemical properties of the nanoparticles and textiles combined with the growth inhibitory capacity against microbes has led to the upsurge in the research on nanoparticles and their potential application as antimicrobial textiles.Medical textile which is also called as healthcare textile is an intimate combination of textile technology and medical as well as nano science.Nanotechnology has variety of applications in the textile especially in the field of medical and hygiene products due to their specific and unique property. Besides its countless beneficial applications, including in health, medicinal and textiles; concerns exist on adverse health consequences of unintended human exposures to the textiles treated with nanomaterials. Exposure of nanomaterials to the workers, consumers, and the environment seems inevitable with the increasing number of commercially available products based on the nanotechnology. The current paper critically reviews the applications of bio-nanotechnology in the textiles along with its benefits over the traditional nanotechnology. Also the paper enlightens the present status of nanomaterials in the field of medical textiles and its impact on health of human being.
