In the research for a maximum activity of micro-organisms, particularly in order to obtain excellent yields of bioreactions, two contradictory requirements must be fulfilled: it is desirable to confine the micro-organisms in order to avoid the contamination of substrates and products, but said confinement exerts an unfavoraable effect on the reaction speeds, which are limited by the transport of substrates and products through the structure provided for the confinement. According to the invention, this problem is solved by arranging the micro-organisms in a phase 8e delimited by a membrane 2e of which the porosity is just enough to retain the micro-organisms, but which is permeable to all substrates or products consumed or excreted during the activity of said micro-organisms.
