En la John Carter Brown Library se encuentra una rica colecci?3n de pliegos de villancicos impresos en M??xico en la segunda mitad del siglo XVII y los primeros a?±os del XVIII. Las composiciones impresas en esta clase de pliegos, de contenido y finalidad religiosos, se cantaban en las iglesias y catedrales de ambos lados de Atl??ntico. El presente art?-culo describe y sit?oa a la colecci?3n en su contexto, haciendo ??nfasis en las semejanzas y diferencias que existen entre los pliegos novohispanos de Brown y los que se imprimieron en la Pen?-nsula Ib??rica. Este art?-culo tambi??n explora la inserci?3n de canciones populares de origen peninsular en el cuerpo de los poemas impresos en los pliegos de Brown, una manifestaci?3n m??s del intercambio trasatl??ntico que caracteriz?3 la vida cultural de la Nueva Espa?±a. The John Carter Brown Library holds a rich collection of poetic chapbooks printed in Mexico during the second half of the 17th century and the first years of the 18th century. Poems (villancicos) such as those in this collection had religious content and purpose. They were sung in churches and cathedrals on both sides of the Atlantic. This article describes and contextualizes the Brown collection, emphasizing the similarities and differences between these chapbooks from New Spain and other chapbooks printed in the Iberian Peninsula. This article also examines the introduction of popular lyrics of peninsular origin to the body of poems printed in the Brown chapbooks as a manifestation of the transatlantic exchange that characterized cultural life of the viceroyalty of New Spain.
