The prospect of trying to produce a readable survey text on the broad, sometimes amorphous, and huge realm of what might constitute digital libraries is a daunting one. Yet Karen Calhoun has done a masterful job distilling and synthesizing a massive amount of scholarship into a comparatively short work. Some sections touch very lightly on their subject, but to have consistently gone into detail would have resulted in a behemoth text, and one that would have been far less useful. As it is, this book ought to be valuable for anyone, student or seasoned professional, who wants a basic grounding in digital libraries. It is well-indexed and includes a large (52-page) list of references.
