Dependable Companion: The Rise of Pontiac, 1926-30

Most auto enthusiasts know that Pontiac got its start in 1926, and many remember its prominence as a performance brand in the Sixties and Seventies before its demise in 2010. However, few are as well versed in its origins as an outgrowth of the Oakland Motor Car Company, one of the original Michigan-based independent makes that William C. "Billy" Durant bought up to form General Motors. Fewer still are aware that Pontiac lasted far longer than any of the other "companion makes" that GM introduced in the Twenties, was the only one to outlive its parent marque, and that its genesis is inextricably tied not only Oakland but also to Chevrolet.
