The first of the 1940 models began coming off assembly lines that month, and to a car they displayed one common design element: round seven-inch headlights that glowed with a new type of illumination. The dawn of a revolution in automotive lighting had arrived. It is often assumed that the new lights were a response to some sort of government regulation. The story is much more complicated.
