The styling of the first new postwar Chevrolet wasn't as advanced as that of its rival, the '49 Ford with its smooth flanks and fenders that flowed in an unbroken line from front to rear. However, the Chevy had pleasing lines and a junior-Cadillac look that was well received by the public. Ford won the sales race in 1949 , (perhaps because it had an extra-long model year), but Chevrolet took back the top spot for 1950 by a large margin. Chevrolets of the era were well built and reliable, which also helped their popularity.
