hile World War II in the Pacific was still raging, the federal government decided that it was time to reduce military production and prepare for peacetime. Some American auto assembly lines were moving before Japan surrendered on August 15. Ford was the first American automaker to resume production-its first car came off the line on July 3, 1945, and was delivered to President Harry Truman. As other established automakers would do, Ford returned with a continuation of its 1942 model. A stockpile of prewar body parts helped Ford get the jump on the competition. By October 26, 1945, Ford had stockpiled enough cars for its "V-8 Day" introduction of the 1946 models.
