As the postwar years of the late Forties gave way to the Fifties, a new phenomenon emerged in an America of rapidly increasing wealth with an appetite for all kinds of new consumer goods: the fad culture. The automobile industry was caught up in all the hoopla, usually producing cars with no more than three-year styling cycles and even then performing annual tweaks to maintain novelty. It was an expen- sive concession to the competitive pressures of the times that lasted through the heyday of the muscle car era that arose in the Sixties.
