When Worlds Collide: A Crosley-packard Cross

Speculation has long attended the background of a Crosley-Packard (Croslard? Packley?) station wagon depicted in a series of photographs discovered long ago in the Packard archives. The betting runs on Edward Macaulay-son of longtime president and chairman Alvan-who was vice president for styling in the Fifties and who had a penchant for oddballs with the budget to indulge himself. Whether built at Packard or elsewhere, somebody was having fun. To the basic 1951 Crosley wagon, the cus-tomizer applied an "ox-yoke" grille, cormorant hood ornament, and cloissone hubcaps-Packard touchstones all-along with a combination of basket-weave and Di-Noc woodgrain side panels. A set of wide whitewalls finished off the ensemble.
