While it embraced the intermediates and personal-luxury cars that tapped lucrative new markets in the Sixties, Buick continued to invest in making its mainline large family cars better. It was money well spent.rnAfter being down for the count in the fight for sales in the late Fifties, Buick got back on its feet in the Sixties by adding compacts, intermediates, and the elegant personal-luxury Riviera to its product mix. But big cars remained the division's stock-in-trade, and they got better every year. After gaining a more-confident look for 1965-66, the "upper-series" became more daring still for 1967, as General Motors Vice President Robert L. Kessler-who replaced the highly lauded Edward D. Rollert as Buick general manager in June 1965-led the division through a successful period that saw Buick production return to near the record level of 1955. Kessler's successor, Lee N. Mays, ushered in the full-sized 1970s, some of the best built and most powerful big Buicks ever.
