Twenty-five years. It's hard to believe that it's been that long since Chrysler purchased Renault-controlled American Motors. Most observers at the time pointed out that AMC's Jeep brand was the true prize that Chrysler coveted. Some, though, thought another gem was the Renault Premier, AMC's just-about-ready-to-go-on-sale intermediate sedan. Premier was a front-drive four-door family car aimed at the heart of the American new-car market, a segment in which AMC hadn't had an entry since the 1978 Matador. Also included was the Premier's new state-of-the-art factory at Bramalea, Ontario, Canada; reports indicated it had the capacity to build 150,000 cars a year.
