Import cars started to eat into sales of the American domestic brands in the Sixties. Among the casualties was Ford's Falcon, which arrived with the decade, prospered early, but faded into near obscurity by 1970. For the new decade, Ford created the compact Maverick, which was a huge hit, selling more than a half-million copies in its first model year. But the car was introduced just as Ford hit tough times. Updates were gradual, typically to meet various federal regulations.
