The Magnum in Racing: Unsuccessful Successor

From the look of its angled nose and smooth fender caps, the Magnum should have been a worthy heir to Dodge's success in stock car racing in the Seventies. Looks can be deceiving, though. With the 1974 Charger body favored by a number of teams no longer eligible in NASCAR-sanctioned races after the 1977 season, attention turned to the 'shovel-nose' Magnum for the '78 campaign. The factory-supported Petty Enterprises team built test cars that reached 190 mph, and even took one to the Lockheed wind tunnel in Georgia to glean data on the car's aerodynamic properties.
