摘要

Ever since Ralph Nader launched his crusade against cars, Detroit interviews have resembled what they must be like in the Pentagon. Before you get to the typical factotum, you must wade through a cadre of PR and legal suits who want to know why you wish to chat, what you're going to ask, where you're going to publish it, and whether you'll stick to the set text (always as optimistic as all get-out). Things were never this way on my visits to American Motors in the old Nash building on Plymouth Road, Southfield, Michigan. You simply rang up your contact and set a date. You might even be told, "I'm too busy at the office-come out later to the house." That was exactly what Dick Teague told me in 1975. We met in his garage in Franklin, Michigan, on the floor next to his 1906 Pope-Toledo.
