Lightning in a Bottle Again: The Return of the Electric Car in America

The electric car, which once enjoyed fairly broad patronage in America before giving way to gasoline-engine vehicles, is staging a limited comeback these days. This revival comes as no bolt from the blue, however. It has reached fruition only after decades of slow, sometimes frustrating, research; a changing ethic among some motorists; and, for better or for worse, the growing involvement of government.
