The device has an induction sensor (3) arranged with respect to an electrically insulating structure (11) such that the sensor delivers a signal when lightning arrester strips (10) of the structure carry lightning current, where the strips are made of electrically conducting material. The strips are provided on an outer surface (12) of the structure that is subjected to a lightning impact and are connected to an electrically conducting structure of an aircraft i.e. cargo aircraft. The sensor is arranged in an inner volume nearer to an inner surface (13) of the structure (11). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method of detecting a lightning impact on an electrically insulating structure (2) a method of comparing characteristics qualities of a radome in presence of lightning impacts (3) a method of determining potential loss of a radome.
