There's no substitute for cubic inches," some automotive figure important enough to be quoted once said, and who's to argue? Certainly not the performance-car collectors who give their checkbooks an exhaustive workout at the major auctions. (Certainly not the smiling auctioneers, either!) Certainly not the magazine writers who revealed them when new and the book authors who have celebrated them since. Certainly not us. Admittedly, muscle cars aren't for everyone. There are car people who find them to be loud, harsh, and one-dimensional excesses. They're not necessarily wrong. But for a lot of old-car buffs, the horsepower-infused fire-breathers are the best reason there is to like a particular brand of car. If you think like that, good news: We've got them sprinkled around this issue, even in places you might not expect to see one.
