1967-70 Cadillac Eldorado: Applying a Personal Touch

When Cadillac revealed its stunning Elmiraj concept coupe at the 2013 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, General Motors Advanced Design Director Clay Dean noted that the twenty-first-century show car was influenced by the 1967 Eldorado. Speaking of the breathtaking late-Sixties Cadillac "personal car," he said, "Both its actual design, and the fact that in its time that car was a very stark contrast . . . drove Cadillac forward into new territory." The 1967 Eldorado was styled under the direction of William R. "Bill" Mitchell, who became GM's vice president of styling following Harley Earl's late-1958 retirement. During Mitchell's tenure, the hits just kept on coming. The original Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray, Buick Riviera, Pontiac Grand Prix, Oldsmobile Toronado, and the Eldorado were but the creme de la creme of the enormously popular and influential designs emanating from GM Styling during his first decade at the helm.
