Studebaker got its start building farm wagons, but after it joined the automobile industry, its production of work vehicles was spotty. However, Studebaker supplied almost 200,000 trucks for World War II. Most of those went to the Soviet Union. In his book More Than Promised: The Studebaker Story, Thomas E. Bonsall wrote that the military transport provided by Studebaker trucks was crucial in the Soviets' fight against the German invasion, and many years into the Cold War, Russia's military remained dependent on Studebaker trucks.
