Spearheading China's plans as a leading coal exporter

China's Shenhua Group is developing a huge coal project with a state investment of US$5.2bn. This includes the massive Shenfu-Dongheng coalfield, associated 1040km rail corridor, a pithead power station, a dedicated terminal and a large shipping fleet. A recent Australian study suggests that China wants to compete with the US in the coal export market. AME Mineral Economics in Sydney has forecast a time will come when China will rival US, for so long a significant global coal supplie and one-time number one. The AME study points out that China has cargo advantages due to its geographical proximity to the import markets in Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. Besides, the country is making huge infrastructure improvements.
