Despite opposition from President Jacob Zuma, there has been growing discussion of mining nationalisation in South Africa in recent weeks. The influential youth league of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) has joined some trades union representatives in calling for state ownership of the country's vast coal resources and other mining assets.rnZuma was forced to issue a statement on 16 February arguing that mining nationalisation was not part of government policy andrnindeed such a strategy would run counter to the ANC's policy of seeking to retain multilateral investment in the 16 years since it came to power.
