Grabs get a dusting down

The movement of any bulk commodity will displace air, particularly in the vertical mode, which in turn will cause the surface layer to break away in the form of dust particles. Grabs are vulnerable to dust generation during closing and lifting but especially during opening when discharging. While grab design is crucial, there is further potential for dust reduction with tailored hopper design in conjunction with dust-reducing equipment. For dry cargoes, such as agribulks, it is possible to fit dust extraction and filters while for commodities such as coal, a water spray can be fitted to the hopper.
