摘要

Independents are competing - and succeeding - against their chain competitors. Chains have more resources, i.e. a corporate staff courted by manufacturers willing to jump through hoops to get their merchandise on the shelves. They have the luxury of time, huge marketing campaigns and markdown strategies months in advance. They have money, whether by adding stores or scaling back non-performers. All collectively contribute to a positive bottom line. Independents have it a little tougher. Some try to write orders at a show, only to be suddenly ignored when a big box buyer walks in the booth. They must act and react quickly, from an endcap that's dead and costing dollars, to the chain's ad that cuts into their weekend sales. And if their store stops showing monthly increases, that spells instant trouble as everyone's livelihood depends on the store being busy.
